The Attention-to-Revenue Funnel
Most creators start out doing what you could call Post and Pray: make content, upload it, hope the algorithm rewards it with views that somehow become income. That's a gamble, not a strategy. The alternative has a name — the marketing funnel — and it turns "why isn't this working" into a specific, answerable question.
Why one post can't do everything
A funnel works because it separates different problems a fan is solving at different points in their relationship with you. A stranger who's never heard of you has a recognition problem. A follower who's never paid has a trust problem. Someone at checkout has a friction problem. A subscriber deciding whether to renew has a satisfaction problem. Asking a single post to solve all four at once usually produces mediocre results on every front.
Three stages, three jobs
- Discovery (top of funnel). Reach and awareness on mass-market platforms — not built to sell, built to be found.
- Trust (middle of funnel). Deeper, more consistent content that builds enough confidence that paying feels like a low-risk decision.
- Conversion (bottom of funnel). Your actual paid platform, optimized so a ready buyer can act without friction.
Think of the funnel as a pipeline with lag: what happens at the top today shapes revenue weeks or months from now, not immediately. Revenue can look healthy in a given week while the top of the funnel is quietly drying up — a problem you won't see in your income until later.
A worked example
Say 1,000 people see your discovery content on a mass-market platform this month. Of those, 80 follow your middle-of-funnel account — an 8% discovery-to-follow rate. Of those 80, 6 subscribe to your paid platform — a 7.5% follow-to-paid rate. If discovery content dries up next month and only 400 people see it, and your ratios hold steady, you'd expect roughly 3 new subscribers instead of 6 — a slowdown you'd only notice in revenue about a month after the actual cause. That lag is exactly why watching the funnel, not just the bank balance, matters.
Put it to work
Map your current content against the three stages. If everything you post is aimed at one stage — all discovery, or all direct sales pitches — that's your biggest single opportunity: adding the missing stage usually moves revenue more than making your existing content better.
